The plot results of a series of demolitions made in the 1930’s and the opening of a new street between downtown and Luís I bridge. The proposal tries to deal with and combine different scales, taking into thoughtful consideration the former neighbourhood, the cathedral, and a more open approach to the avenue and the stone wall ahead.
There is in the whole project a play between matter and void, between private and public space, and between what is seen and what is not. The intervention answers, above all, to the questions posed by the context, improving the existing qualities and adding new ones, with the insertion of the building and the rearrangement of public spaces.
Around the cathedral, it develops different platforms which connect new points. This open space alongside the lateral façade of the cathedral is important to maintain balance with the existing yard in the front.
Between these platforms and the mass of the first building of the student residence a big empty public space is created Between the three buildings that compose the student residence there is a private exterior space and a public connection between two streets with different levels.
The next empty space, defined partially by the former neighbourhood, is a terrace for the cultural association centre which hides an auditorium under it.
The beginning of the avenue is established with the public building of the cultural association centre, set on the lowest point of the plot, creating a connection with the square in front of the nearby train station.
