The town of Sant’Angelo is located in the region of L’Aquila, Italy, which was affected by the strong earthquake in 2009. After the catastrophe and the use of provisional shelters, a new pre-fabricated town was created.
This project of physical, economical and also social reconstruction should reuse the space of the destroyed town and the existing materials.
The guiding principles of intervention are:
_To improve the town’s urban structure as a whole, keeping in mind its small dimension;
_To build a public space – a container – where life, social relations, uses and functions – the content – can happen;
_To work with memory, embedding in the project the clues of recent events and situations, without forgetting the town’s character. The logic is the “preservation of the intervention”;
_To take care of the town’s identity not just in the definition of public spaces, but also in the shape and architectonic language, always thinking in a contemporary way;
_To densify this rural centre, redefining a way of living in this area by emphasizing the existing qualities, avoiding the idea of being just another suburban area;
_To redesign the space with recovered materials and also with traditional techniques of construction.
Combining the values of the past, preserving the ideas for the future: the project is done in the present taking care of the past, including the recent destruction.
