The Dance Academy building is an answer to the context: in one direction the plot is located between a harbour and a low--density neighbourhood; in the other direction, it is the first moment after a long platform and the beginning of the city near the harbour. The project extends the context to the plot, it finds in the play of matter and void the answer to harmonize and reorganize the urban area, connecting different logics and ideas that were living close to each other.
The project is created through the play between a discrete volume, which defines a little street, and a more notorious volume, which organizes the void generated between itself and the neighbouring market.
The void between the volumes and the market is designed through the division between a private garden platform and a paved entrance space, that points to it.
The building is connected to the exterior through a big opening between the foyer and the square. The work of light, together with the union of different functions and paths, forms a space of both reunion and dispersion.
The lower volume aggregates the public spaces of the school, such as the auditorium, library and cafeteria, while the administrative functions and the high-ceilling rooms for dancing are located in the higher volume.
In the end, the strength of these masses is balanced with the sensibility towards the scale and the play of voids.
